Understanding the Entire Process

Witness the beautiful transformation from a lock of hair to a breathtaking diamond ring

The Amount of Hair Needed:

4 grams

The amount of carbon in each person's hair is slightly different. To make sure we have enough carbon to grow your diamond to the desired weight, you need to provide 4 grams of hair.

Turnaround Time:

3-6 months

It takes approximately 4 months for a 1ct diamond to grow and a longer period for larger diamonds. Colour enhancement and jewellery setting will require additional months to complete.

Starting Price:

A$ 3,200

The price of the diamond is determined by the diamond size, colour, and shape you choose. The costs of ring setting, certification, and laser inscription will be calculated separately.

Welcome Kit

A$150

Our Welcome Kit contains everything you need for packing and sending your hair. With this kit, you may determine your ring size and learn more about our service. It is an optional step to make your process easier.

(This will be deducted from your second installment.)

Order Process

1. Select

Choose your diamond colour, shape, and size, and jewellery setting if desired.

2. Prepare

Gather approximately 4 grams of your hair, which measures about a cup.

3. Send

Place the sample in a sealed container and ship it to our Burbank office.

4. Pay

Pay only the diamond fee upon ordering and the rest upon completion.

It takes about 4 months for a 1ct diamond. Priority Express is available.

The Lab Process

How your hair becomes a sparkling diamond

Step 01

Hair Preparation

First, we sanitise your hair sample and analyse it to determine the carbon content. Gender, age, and hair colour have no impact on the carbon content of the sample. Typically the sample is 41-46% carbon. The sample is sealed in a disposable sample tube, then ground into a fine powder.

Step 02

Carbon Purification

The hair powder is placed into a high-temperature vacuum tube furnace at an average temperature of approximately 1,400°C (2,500°F). Oxygen is removed from the environment to ensure the carbon does not oxidise. After this thermal process, the carbon content increases to about 97%.

Step 03

Graphitization

Our lab experts manually work on the sample within a fume hood. A multi-step chemical process aided by a formula of strong bases, strong acids, and organic solvents further purify the carbon to achieve 99.9% ultra-high purity. Then, an ultra-high-temperature furnace, using controlled atmosphere and vacuum induction heating technology, turns the carbon into graphite.

Step 04

Crystallisation

Our high-pressure, high-temperature apparatus creates an environment similar to that of Mother Earth's mantle, at a whopping pressure of 200 atmospheres and a temperature of 1,500°C (2,700°F). Combined with the solvent catalyst, diamond seed, graphite heater, and other necessary components, the graphite grows into a carbon crystal, otherwise known as a diamond.

Step 05

Cutting and Polishing

Cutting and polishing are important steps for diamond manufacturing. The rough stone is cleaved and sawed into a preliminary shape. Every detail of the process will affect the value of the final polished gem.

Step 06

Certification

Our GIA certification refers to the Gemological Institute of America and is an official document that guarantees the quality of the diamond you ordered. Our IGI certification refers to the International Gemological Institute, and it helps to evaluate the quality of your Sunny Eden™ diamond from an authoritative perspective.

FAQs

  • We extract the carbon from hair, purify it, and then put it in a High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) environment. Just like natural diamonds that are formed underground, a diamond is created in a similar environment.

  • There is no need to wash or clean the hair before sending it to us. It will be cleaned and sterilised in our laboratory.

  • The diamond growing process is unique for each diamond. We cannot give you an exact date as to when the diamond will be ready. Based on our experience, it takes around 4 months for a one-carat diamond, and an additional month for each of the following additional services: certification, laser inscription, or jewellery set. Of course, larger diamonds take a bit longer.

  • No, it does not. Clarity depends on carbon purification. The colouration of diamonds depends on the elements such as Nitrogen within the hair, which does affect the colour intensity — not the colour itself. The individual components present in hair may bring about a lighter or darker shade as each individual's hair composition differs from another’s. Sunny Eden™ can control the colour range by separating undesired elements. However, the final colour depends on its origins — every diamond has a unique colour.
